Sausage Party is hard to describe…
It is basically the journey to enlightenment and the right isle after a mishap causes a ragtag group of food to end up “out of package” while their friends enjoy the bliss/horror of “the great beyond”.
It is a movie that has all the elements of a good film but is somehow so crazy that it keeps people at a loss for words. In the same vein of the spectacle of The Hangover or Anchorman, Sausage Party is bizarre and shockingly hilarious.
However, it does not lend itself to the scope of appeal that the previous films have because of its depth of vulgarity (which is crazy because this is an animated film).
It is offensive almost universally, all of the characters are walking stereotypes. The characters are designed this way intentionally but there are some missed opportunities that perhaps they were afraid to take too far. It is kind of dangerous territory. Could easily be interpreted as “we tried to offend everyone so you and your special interest group can’t take offense.” Tack on the persistent sexual innuendo (that is almost cheap when paired with the use of food as characters) and you get a quintessentially dirty stoner movie.
But getting into it as solely a source of entertainment, the movie delivers. Sausage party keeps you engaged at all times. It is fast paced, funny with some surprisingly visually stunning effects.
MVP – Animation
The animation might be the silent MVP of this film, despite the poor treatment of the animators involved. This movie was intentional and it was handled with care, and in a world where most of these new movies seem to be underdeveloped as stories and over developed as business ventures it is refreshing to see a crazy idea and execute it well.
It is basically NC 17 and that is hard to do with animation but they pull it off, I think the average young adult will find this hilarious but with all the offensive comedy and the outrageous language and subject matter, I know many older viewers and sophisticated pallets will not appreciate this movie. If you are not in those categories then yes go see Sausage Party and tell us what you think in the comments!
